The Gimp of the Computer: The beating of the yardstick

A short story
By: Michelle Daurora

It was a sort of Jekel and Hyde as I remember it, all day and everyone, everyone except for myself. My friends were no longer who they used to be, they masked their identities so the normal did not and would not expect a thing. Why do I tell you from the past, Ill start in the morning

Laci and I were walking into school as we always did each morning before school had officially started. As we walked past the board room I heard lots of raised voices, the door was cracked open so I figured Id stop to listen. As I stopped Kelli came gimping up, supposedly hearing the fight as well. She didnt look herself though, her eyes were big and yellow, and her posture was humped. We stood there listening.

Strangers from distant districts, friends of oldyouve been summoned here to answer to the threat of Trogdor. Wiggle-Mirth stands upon the brink of destruction. Non can escape it. You will unite, or you will fall. Each race is bound to this fate, this one doom.
Bring forth the thing Kodo, Dr. Vranesvic was saying, he was in a green robe, and wore a long brown wig, complete with headband. As I watched Mrs. Kyle hauled a computer up to a circular table. As she sat back down, murmuring began.
So it is true, Mr. Maples said stroking his chin as his finger pointed outward. He had since stopped subbing at Apollo and moved onto Saltsburg.
The doom of man, Mr. Bevington whispered, adjusting his Dollar General uniform.
It is a girt, Mr. Maples continued. A gift to the foes of Trogdor. Why not use this thing? Long has my father, the Steward of fawnwhore kept the forces of Trogdor at bay. By the blood of our people are your lands kept safe? Give Fawnwhore the weapon of the enemy. Let us use it against him.
You cannot wield it. None of us can. Yelled Mr. McNally, what little hair had he had left was now brown and he was equip with nose ring. The One Thing answers to Saruon alone. It has no other master.
And what would a Ranger know of this matter? Mr. Maples shot back.
This is no mere Ranger, he is Aragorn son of Arathorn. You owe him your allegiance. Came a new voice, it was Timolas Townsend, janitor at Leechburg.
Aragorn? This is yo mamas heir? Asked Mr. Maples
And heir to the throne of Fawnwhore. Tim said matter-o-factly.
Itsay Ownday Timolas. Mr. McNally said sincerely.
Fawnwhore has no king. Mr. Maples snapped. Fawnwhole needs no king.
Aragorn is right, we cannot use it. Agreed Mr. Eddy. Just then, Dr. Vranesvic stood up, looking very serious.
You have only one choice. The thing must be destroyed.
Then what are we waiting for? Mrs. Akins asked roughly standing up. She picked up, The Big Book of PC Virus and went charging at the computer. Before she got there, the book burned up and she flew back. Mrs. Kyle put a hand to her face.
The Thing cannot be destroyed Gimlette, daughter of Gloin, by any craft that we here possess. The Thing was made in the factories of Mount Mushroom. Only there can it be unmade. It must be taken deep into Trogdor, and cast back into the fiery chasm from whence it came. Dr. Vranesvic announced. I looked over to Kelli, her eyes were glazed over and mouth was wide open mouthing the words my precious. One of you, must do this.
One does not simply walk into Trogdor. Its Black Gates are guarded by more than just dorks. There is evil there, it does not sleep. The Grape Pie is ever-watchful. It is a barren wasteland, riddled with fire, and ash, and dust. The very air you breath, is a poisonous fume. Not with ten thousand men could you do this. It is folly. Mr. Maples said sighing.
Have you heard nothing Lord Vranesvic has said? The Thing must be destroyed! Timolas yelled jumping up.
And I suppose you think youre the one to do it!? Mrs. Akins yelled hopping up.
And if we fail, what then? Mr. Maples inquired. What happens when Sauron takes back what it his?
I will be dead before I see the Thing in the hands of a Leechburgian! Mrs. Akins yelled. There was an uproar, the halls were beginning to clear, but all of our teachers were in that ill-fated room, finally Mrs. Kyle stood up, I then realized she had on a brown curly wig, and huge feet.
I will take the Thing to Trogdor, She announced, everyone looked at her.
Right then, Mr. McNally said. That was easy enough, stash it in your library until you can make the journey, goodbye.
All the teachers stood and were filing toward the door, Kelli and I took off, when they saw us, they just thought I was helping Kelli. Everything seemed fine then, that was, until I entered my second block honors history class. I was staring out the window, the sky was blue, but a black shadow was cast over almost everything. I could not see the sun, it was bugging me, I was barely paying attention.
Thats odd, all the boys are out. Mrs. Querio said, that caught my attention. Oh well. We will be going to the library today to finish our research on the Civil Rights Movement.
YES! Kelli yelled, MT PRECIOUS! She started to cough, Smeaglli! Smeaglli!
No one paid any mind to her, Lori, Kelli, and I were the last to leave the room. As we walked past Mr. Robertos we once again heard raised voices and stopped. The most distinct was the screaming and squealing of Adam Kolcun.
LIBRARY! He yelled, KYLE!
Then, dashing out the door was: Matt Shirey, Doug Bandurak, Brian Foreman, Dan Shear, Tyler Berg, Anthony Hepler, and Greg Jankowski. They were all in matching garb, black flowing outfits with hoods, they were all screeching, HOORAH! Then out of no where, someone from down the hall yelled, The Trogdor 7!
Kelli screamed and took off toward the library, whose back entrance was open, so she got there first. When we got in, Dan Madison was sitting in front of the computer which we had seen earlier in the morning.
NOO! Kelli yelled gimping over, Dan looked up at her. Its mine! It came to me! MY PRECIOUS!!
Before Dan could say anything, Kelli had taken her crutches in her hands and began to viciously beat Dan with them. With each smack, he got farther and farther from the computer, until he was on the other side of the library. Kelli ran back and wrapped her arms around the monitor of the computer and smiled at Lori and I.
I found it, She explained. It came to me!
What happened next was so bizarre that I could barely believe it. As Kelli unhooked the computer Mrs. Kyle ran over with a yard stick and hit Kelli with it. In return, Kelli picked up a crutch and began to duel with her. The roof opened up and Adam descended from a heating duct.
KOLLUM! KOLLUM! He coughed. As he jumped down, he landed scrunched up and hunched over, rocking back and forth. Mrs. Kyle backed up and Kelli assumed the same position as Kollum or Adam, or whoever he was.
SMEAGLLI! SMEAGLLI! Kelli coughed. They glared at each other menacingly and next thing I knew, they lunged at each other.
Its my precious! Smeaglli screamed hitting Kollum.
It came to me! Kollum yelled kicking Smeaglli off. Lori and I stood there, watching silently, stunned.
I know what to do, Smeaglli said in a scratchy voice.
DIE! Kollum yelled lunging at her again, then stopping. What?
We can share the precious. Kelli reasoned, her face lightning.
NO! Kollum yelled. They got closer but farther away from everyone else. Deep down I knew what was going to happen, but I dared not think it.
We wants it. We needs it. Must have the precious. They stole it from us. Sneaky little slobesess. Wiked. Tricksy. False. Kollum yelled
No. Not Master. Smeaglli said shaking her head.
Yes, precious, false! They will cheat you, hurt you lie! Kollum continued.
Masters my friend. Smeaglli said innocently.
You dont have any friends, nobody likes you! Kollum laughed.
Not listening, Im not listening! Smeaglli yelled putting her hands over her ears.
Youre a liar and a thief. Kollum slurred out.
No, defended Smeaglli.
Murderer. Kollum whispered.
Go away, Smeaglli cried.
Go away? Kollum laughed.
I hate you. She cried, I hate you.
Where would you be without me? Kollum. Kollum. I saved us. It was me. We survived because of me!
Not anymore, Smeaglli spat.
What did you say? Kollum asked, obviously outraged.
Master looks after us now we dont need you. Smeaglli laughed.
What? He asked.
Leave now and never come back Smeaglli demanded.
NO He yelled.
Leave now and never come back. She said again, this time he only growled. Leave now and never come back. We told him to go away and away he goes precious. Gone! Gone! Gone! Smeagllis free!!!! She proceeded to so cart wheels across the library as Lori and I ran from the library laughing.
